Advancing Rural Connectivity
Tū Ātea is engaged with the New Zealand Government on key policy areas crucial for advancing rural connectivity, strengthening community resilience, fostering innovation and supporting workforce development. Central to these efforts is the focus on improving rural connectivity, where Tū Ātea advocates for equitable access to high-speed internet and advanced communication services in remote areas, many of which are predominantly Māori.
This enhanced connectivity is essential not only for bridging the digital divide, but also for supporting local industries, enabling better access to essential services, and fostering economic development. Tū Ātea also emphasises the importance of workforce development in these regions, working to create opportunities for Māori in the telecommunications and technology sectors, ensuring that they are not just beneficiaries but active participants and leaders in the digital economy.
Additionally, Tū Ātea plays a pivotal role in shaping future spectrum management policies, with a focus on advocating for Māori rights and interests in this critical resource. As a key operational partner of the Māori Spectrum Working Group (MSWG), we actively contribute to discussions around spectrum allocation, ensuring that the needs and aspirations of Māori communities are prioritised. Our work promotes policies that encourage industry growth and innovation while opening doors for Māori to thrive in these sectors.
Through our 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), we align spectrum policies with broader national goals of economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equity. This collaboration underscores the commitment of Tū Ātea to integrating Māori perspectives into the future of New Zealand’s digital landscape, building a more connected, resilient, and innovative society led by a skilled Māori workforce.
